MyBB

The MyBB team have released a security patch which fixes 3 security vulnerabilities in the current 1.4.x forum software. Two of these problems are low risk, either requiring admin permissions or do not cause any harm to your board. The other problem however is a high risk SQL injection vulnerability and therefore you should update your board immediately.

A thread in their partner’s host support forum blames the loss of data on an ‘error on the disk of the server’. According to the support staff the database and all backups have been corrupted and it is highly unlikely any of the forums will work in the near future. All hosted forums currently display an error message along with a chatbox to allow members to commuicate.

Board owners who bought ad free boards and premium upgrades are able to request a refund or start a new board at ForumWise.

Those looking for somewhere to start their forum up again may wish to check our our free forum hosting resource pages which lists a number of free forum hosts.

The official phpBB website has been taken offline after it was hacked. The phpBB team are keen to emphasize that the hacker exploited an out dated installation of phpList and that there are no [known] issues with phpBB itself.

The hacker managed to access the phpBB.com’s community forums and dump a copy of the users table this has obvious issues in terms of the email addresses and passwords that were stored. Whilst phpBB3 uses an advanced password hashing algorithm users who had not logged into the phpBB forums since it was upgraded in 2007 will still have passwords stored in plain md5 which isn’t as secure. The best advice is to change your password at any location if it was the same as your phpBB password.

Every page of the phpBB website has been down since Sunday and as a result a number of the style downloads which are linked to from here will not work until the website is back online.
